MESSAGES

DOUGLAS MATTHEWS: My father was a Royal Marine and served on HMS Furious from 1939 - 1943 He was on the Atlantic,  Russian and Malta convoys, Norwegian Fjords and in Philadelphia for the refit.  If anyone  knew him or may have photos of Marines and crew I would love to hear form them.

ALLEN ANKER.. My grandfather was an observed on an aircraft and was part of the RNAS serving on HMS Furious. Are there any crew lists available that could verify this information?

THOMAS WILLIAM CARTER.. My Dad was a crew member on HMS Furious from December 1940 to Autumn 1943. His name was Thomas William Carter, Service No. DKX108108, Stoker First Class. He left HMS Furious and joined HMS Illustrious from Autumn 1943 to Summer 1945. It is with regret that I inform anyone who knew my Dad that he passed away on Friday December 13 at home, aged 81. He was a life member of the Royal Naval Association and a member of the RBL Stourport branch. The photo on the right was taken of my Dad at the November 2002 Remembrance Service in Stourport on Severn.

DONALD HODGES.. My late father Donald, served on Furious from 1940/1-1944/45. He was a CPO in the Stores. He was with Furious on her trip to Philadelphia fro re-fit. He said this was due to propeller damage sustained during a 'visit' to a Norwegian fjord. He also went to West and North Africa and the Mediterranean as well as North Atlantic trips. I have a document of his naval memories which includes his time on Adventure (1936-1940) as well as his time on Furious. I would be glad to share this and would like other information about the time he was aboard Furious.

PILOT OFFICER WAINWRIGHT: Seeking anyone who served on HMS Furious in November 1939, or their relatives, who has info on 151 Squadron. On November 27th Wainwright and 16 of his colleagues took off from HMS Furious bound for Takoradi, unfortunately he ended up in the sea. He survived only to be killed defending Tobruk some two months later. I would be grateful if anyone remembers 151 squadron being on the ship

Dr CONOR O'MALLEY.. During WW1 my grandfather, Dr Conor O'Malley, joined HMS Furious and served as a ships surgeon. He joined in January 1918. Is there a crew list for 1918-1919?

MICHAEL FRANCIS EDWARDS (BUNGY)... My late grandfather served on HMS Furious for the duration of World War II. His brother-in-law (my great uncle) went down with HMS Glorious. I think it is awful that the name Furious has been removed from the fleet but I still have a brass teapot stand, made by my granddad, with the ship's badge on it. I would love to know if anyone remembers him.

WILLIAM VIDLER.. My late grandfather (who died 5 years ago) served on HMS Furious during WW1. He also used to serve on airships at sea and once lobbed a shell/grenade at a submarine without success. I don't know if the airship and Furious were related. If anyone has a crew list of that time or photographs I would love to hear from them.

ARTHUR WALKER...I served on HMS Furious from January 1940 - June 1943. I would love to see any photos of the ship and crew at this time and hear from any old shipmates.

WILLIAM BILLY BURKE.. My cousin was a Royal Marine on board HMS Furious during WW2. He was on board when the ship spent most of a year in refit in Philadelphia naval shipyard. We never heard from him again. I wonder if anybody remembers him. If you can help me find out any information on Billy I would be grateful.

BRIAN HENDY  Can anyone tell me the ports the Furious visited during August 1933 and August 1935.

MR VALENTINE BURN....My father Valentine Burn (Val) now in his mid 80's served on the Furious from 1941 until 1944/5. As far as I remember he joined the ship in Greenock and with 4 or 5 other marines saw the war through until 1944. He is a bit vague at times about his wartime experiences but remembers when they were in Belfast on the ship and there was a major air raid. He and a friend were ashore staying at the friends house but spent most of the night rescuing people arriving back at the ship. In the early hours saw a parachute mine attached to the bow line and were promptly put on a charge because of  the state of their uniforms. Mt father has suffered two strokes which makes things a little difficult, but is keen to contact others who served on the Furious.

WILL HARDING.. I served on HMS Furious from 1941-1943. I was a member of the engineering department and was with the ship during refit at Philadelphia. During this time I was a member of the HMS Furious Harmonica Band. We entered a DR1Q Candy Talent Competition on American Radio and won first place. We were also guests of RCA recording works in New Jersey on their 50th Anniversary and also guested at Airport Circle Night Club, New Jersey. I am now 80 and live in South Wales and would like to contact any other member of the band.

JOHN WATTON. My Late father in law died on the 23rd December 2001 at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. He served aboard HMS Furious from June 1941 until December 1944 as a Stoker 1 in the D B Party. He was not a professional sailor but none the less was extremely proud of his ship and his service in her.

JOE COTTON: (STOKER) My father served on HMS Furious during WW2. he died 12 years ago but I would love to hear from anyone who may have known him.

HMS FURIOUS GLADIATOR AIRCRAFT.. As part of a group of aviation enthusiast I went to Norway to retrieve a Gloster Gladiator MKII wreck from a mountain in Northern Norway. It is one from a flight which was launched from HMS Furious on the 21st May 1940. We are looking for photo's showing Gladiators in their colour scheme at that time. Is there any crew aboard Furious which can remember or have photo's, in particular for Gladiator N5697, or P/O WP Richards.
