MESSAGES

RON GENTRY..  I served on the "Happy" Hermes from 1966 until 1969, starting off as a JM (E)2 and leaving as an LM (E). During my time of Hermes I was always known as "Jim" Gentry and moved about various parts of the ship. including 2 years as a Flight deck Stoker working on the Starboard catapult as a Bridle Number. I ended up over 23 years in the RN. It would be good to hear from anyone else who was on the Hermes during that era, or who may remember me, particularly anyone who knows the whereabouts of "Slim" Thorpe, also an M (E) who came to my wedding in 1969.

BRUCE HOYLE.. Bruce served with the Navy on HMS Hermes as Chief Petty Officer and he came out in 1967?.Unfortunatley he has since passed away. I am looking for any pictures of C.P.O. Hoyle to purchase as a reminder to his son.

JOHN SHEPHERD.. I served on Hermes from her completion for nearly four years. Home was 5NP Mess (I think). Captain Tibbits was the captain of this Hermes. Life at Barrow was not like naval life at all but once we changed from red ensign to white ensign life was "disciplined". I worked on the new radar the 984's display systems known as CDS.. would be nice to hear from any old hands.

JIM (WHISKY) WALKER..LMEM(M).. I served on board Hermes from 1978 till 1982. Still in contact with many friends Wullie Pettigrew, Sam McGreevy, Tug Wilson, George Todd, Frank Harper and many more. I'd like to speak to anyone who was around at that time.

BRENDAN EGAN.. I served on board Hermes in the Air Engineering Department from September 1975 until December 1977. This included the refit at Guz to convert her from commando carrier to operate Sea Harriers. I was on board again in 1982 with 814 NAS who embarked for exercise in Northern waters just before the Falklands conflict. I left in 1983 and if any old shipmates (fishheads or wafu's) who remember me

IAN HALLATT  RO1 (G) -20  I served on the Happy Hermes from 73 to 75 in the Comms branch. Anyone serving on board during that time please get in otuch for a few bevvies maybe and to catch up on old times.

GAVIN "YING" CALDWELL... I am trying to trace Gavin who served on HMS Hermes in the late 60s- early 70s as firecrew. He was from Northern Ireland and I believe he returned there after his service.

MARK BLAKEBOROUGH.. I was 16 in 1980 and was part of a project called "sons at sea". My older brother Petty Officer Andy Blakeborough, was in the navy and the ship was sent on a "jolly" round the Caribbean ... Trinidad, Curacao, Grand Cayman, New Orleans, Pensacola, Fort Lauderdale, Bermuda... I believe this was a one off event and would be interested in hearing from anyone who has a recollection of us. There were about 32 of us ranging in age from 12 to 18 and we were under the supervision of a couple of marines.

R J McCANDLESS.. Marion Rhodes is looking for anyone who served with my great uncle Ltdr Commander R J McCandless DFC (or DSO) on board HMS Hermes in 1961. He was part of the Fleet Air Arm.

NICHOLAS TAYLOR.. I am seeking information about an old school friend of mine, Nicholas Taylor, who was a Sea Harrier pilot form HMS Hermes shot down and killed in May 1982 during the Falklands War.

BOB JARVIE... Bob served on HMS Hermes from 23rd June 1960 until 9th June 1961. I lost him 4 years ago but would like to hear from anyone who knew my dad.

Does anyone remember Ron Vigers another Isa Pussar Hill. Our first commission was in the Far East in locations such as Aden and Hong Kong, passing through the Suez Canal both ways. HMS Glowworm, burning severely after receiving hits from the mighty Admiral Hipper, is depicted turning to begin her heroic sacrifice off the Norwegian coast on 8th April 1940. Hugely out-gunned and already crippled, Glowworms captain, Lieutenant-Commander Roope rammed his destroyer into the side of the Admiral Hipper, inflicting a 40 metre rip in its armour belt before drifting away and exploding. 38 British sailors were rescued from the sea and Roope was awarded a posthumous VC for his bravery, the first earned by the Royal Navy in WWII.

Landing and taking off from the hillsides, rather than established airfields, this was extremely dangerous work which involved the pilot following the terrain and contours of the land that was being dressed in order to ensure an even distribution of the chemical. Australian-born Jim McMahon, served during World War II on B.25 Mitchell bombers before pioneering crop dusting and topdressing in New Zealand with ex-military De Havilland Tiger Moths which he converted himself for the purpose. He went on to form a company called Crop Culture, which specialised in aerial spraying equipment, both in New Zealand and in the UK, before becoming a partner in the newly-formed Britten-Norman aircraft company which produced the Islander and Trislander utility transport aircraft in England.
