HMS Frobisher and HMS Roberts at Normandy by Ivan Berryman

The cruiser HMS Frobisher dominates this scene off Houlgate at the Normandy landings of 1944. The monitor HMS Roberts lies beyond Frobisher with a Large Infantry Landing Ship or LSI (L) unshipping its LCAs on the extreme right of the picture. In the foreground, a motor launch attends a group of LCP (L)s as they head for the French beaches. Two Spitfire Mk.IXs conduct sweeps overhead as Operation Neptune gathers momentum.

Operation Neptune by Ivan Berryman.

Forming part of the Eastern Task Force covering the landings at Normandy in June 1944, the cruiser HMS Mauritius is shown in company with the monitor HMS Roberts and the cruiser HMS Frobisher shelling German batteries at Merville, Houlgate and Benerville as the combined British and American forces embark upon what would become known forever as D-Day.

HMS Frobisher

Launched : 20th March 1920
His Majesty’s Dockyard Devonport launched this Hawkins class heavy cruiser on 20 March 1920 and she entered service in the Royal Navy on 20 September 1924 After commissioning, she served with the Mediterranean Fleet as flagship to the 1st Cruiser Squadron, with a temporary detachment to the China Station in 1926. From 1927 she carried a catapult on the quarter-deck, together with a crane, to operate a small aircraft. After a refit in 1929 she joined the Atlantic Fleet, but joined the Reserve Fleet in November 1930 until conversion to Cadet Training Ship in 1932, which involved the removal of her armament. In early 1939 the cruiser went back into reserve until January 1940 when she began an extensive refit, which included rearming her.
