| The British Armed Sloops Clio and Espiegle Steaming Along the Shatt-El-Arab. On November 7th 1914, the British Expeditionary Force operating from the Persian Gulf landed at Fao, a village on the broad and deep waters of the Shatt-el-Arab. Early in the advance valuable work was done by the Clio and Espiegle, two sloops of one thousand tons, armed with six 4-inch and four 3-pounder guns, and commanded respectively by Commander Colin Mackenzie, D.S.O., who was specially promoted for his services, and Captain Wilfrid Nunn, who was awarded the D.S.O. As the advance progressed in shallower waters, there vessels gave way to an improvised fleet of tugs and paddle steamers. Title and text describing the event beneath image as shown.
