USS North Carolina was built at new York Navy Yard and paid down on the 27th
October 1937 and launched 13th June 1940, commissioned into the US navy
on the 9th April 1941. ready for deployment in August 1941. On the 15th
September 1942 USS North Carolina was torpedoed by a Japanese
submarine south east of the Solomon islands. repairs took just
over a month, before sailing to Puget Sound for refit on the 23rd
June 1944 to 1 October 1944. Employed in 1946 as a training ship.
she was de commissioned on the 27th June 1947 and stricken form the list
on the 1st June 1960. later in 1960 she was presented to North Carolina
as a national Monument. where she still re sides at Wilmington.
