He served throughout the war of 1939-45 being in action during the Battle of the River Plate as a Lieutenant, Gunnery Control Officer aboard HMS Ajax for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. His post-war appointments included Chief of Staff, Mediterranean 1955-57, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff 1958-59, Flag Officer (Flotillas) Mediterranean 1960-61, Flag Officer Air (Home) 1961-62, Commander, Far East Fleet 1962-65, Second Sea Lord 1965-67, Chief Advisor (Personnel and Lofistics) to Secretary of State for Defence 1967-68, Principal Naval ADC to the Queen 1965-68, Gentleman Usher to the Sword of State 1973-80, CBE 1957, CB 1960, KCB 1963 and GCB 1967. He died on 15th May 2003. |
