An officer in the Coldstream Guards, he was Adjutant of the 1st Battlaion in France with the British Expeditionary Force in 1940. He commanded the 3rd Battalion in Italy from November 1943 until 1945. Post-war he held many senior positions, returning as Colonel of the Coldstream Guards from 1966 until 1994. He died in 1997. Major General Sir George Burns GCVO CB DSO OBE MC (deceased) *Signature Value : £40	Major General Sir George Burns was born on 29th January 1911 and was educated at Eton and Cambridge University, where he gained a BA Honours degree in History. He was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards on 3rd September 1932 and was posted to the 3rd Battalion. After tours of duty with the 1st Battalion and the Guards Depot he was appointed ADC to the Viceroy and Governor General of India in January 1938 and then became the Adjutant of the 1st Battalion in April 1940 serving with the Battalion as part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. He commanded the 3rd Battalion in Italy from November 1943 until he attended the Staff College in 1945. He was appointed Brigade Major, Brigade of Guards in July 1945. He commanded the 3rd Battalion again from 1947 to 1950, during which time the Battalion served in Palestine. In 1951-52 he wasthe Assistant Adjutant General London District and was appointed Regimental Lieutenant Colonel Coldstream Guards in October 1952, a post he stayed in until October 1955 when he was appointed Brigade Commader 4 Guards Brigade. His last appointment in the Army was a General Officer Commanding and Major General Commanding Household Brigade, a post he held from September 1959 until he retired in September 1962. The General became Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire in December 1961 and on retiring from Active Service divided his time amongts his many interests which included Horse Racing - he was appointed a Steward of the Jockey Club in 1964 - the Army Cadet Force, shooting and the Association of which he was a great Ambassador. He relinquished the Lord Lieutenancy on 29th January 1986, his 75th birthday. He was the 26th Colonel of the Coldstream Guards, from 8th May 1966 until 29th January 1994, thus giving over 62 years loyal service to the Regiment and his country. During his distinguished career he was awarded the Military Cross in 1940, the Distinguished Service Order in 1944, Mentioned in Despatched in 1945, Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1953, Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1961, Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1962 and Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order in 1991. He died on 5th May 1997.
