![]() John Gregson GC (deceased) *Signature Value : £35 | Joined the Merchant Navy in 1940 and spend four days in a lifeboat in the Atlantic after his ship was torpedoed. Soon after, he joined SS Deucalian on the Pedestal Convoys and in August 1942 was forced to abandon ship after an air attack caused explosions aboard. He rescued a crewman pinned under a raft in the flames, but his injuries were so severe he could not be taken onto a boat or raft, so he was dropped in to the water. In darkness, John Gregson dived into after him and towed the man to another ship hundreds of metres away. For this action he was later awarded the Albert Medal, changed to the George Cross in 1971. He remained in the Merchant Navy after the war, retiring from a maritime career in 1987. He died on 25th December 2016. |
