Clipped Signature - John Harding of Petherton.

Served in World War One with the Territorial Army and Machine Gun Corps before becoming a Lieutenant in the Somerset Light Infantry in 1920. He rose through the ranks to become Field Marshal, his last appointment as Colonel of the Life Guards until 1964. He died in 1989.

1st Baron, created 1958, of Nether Compton : Field Marshal Allan Francis (John) Harding, GCB 1951 (KCB 1944); CBE 1940; DSO 1941; MC. Born 1896 son of the late Francis E Harding, Compton Way, South Petherton, Somerset. Served European War 1914-1919 with TA and Machine Gun Corps (MC); Lieutenant, Somerset Light Infantry 1920; Captain 1923; p.s.c. 1928; Brigade Major, British Force, Saar Plebiscite; Brevet Major 1935; Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1938; Lieutenant Colonel 1939; Brigadier 1942, Major General 1942; Lieutenant General 1943; Geneal 1949; Field Marshal 1953. Served in War of 1939-45 (despatches, CBE DSO and 2 bard, KCB) GOC CMF 1946-1947; GOC in C Southern Command 1947-1949, C in C Far East Land Forces 1949-1951; Commander-in-Chief, British Army of the Rhine 1951-1952, Chief of the Imperial General Staff 1952-1955; Governor and Commander in Chief Cyprus 1955- November 1957.

ADC Gen to King George VI 1950-52; to the Queen 1952-53; Colonel, 6th Gurkha Rifles 1951-1961; Colonel Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry (Somerset Light Infantry 1953 - 1960); Colonel, The Life Guards and Gold Stick to the Queen 1957-1964.
