![]() ![]() Chief Petty Officer J H Youngs *Signature Value : £35 | Joined HMS Ganges as a Boy 2 on August 28th 1934 and was drafted to the battleship HMS Rodney on 19th July 1935 as Boy 1st Class. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman on 12th June 1937. On 29th August 1937 he joined the aircraft carrier HMS Furious. In 1938 he advanced to Able Seaman, took the Air Mechanics Course and was drafted to HMS Courageous on 3rd September 1939. He was aboard Courageous when she was torpedoed and sunk on 17th September 1939. His subsequent service career comprised : 1940 - with No.778 Sqn at HMS Daedalus and the HMS Condor, Arbroath; Promoted Leading Air Mechanic; 1941 - HMS Sparrowhawk in the Orkneys; 1942 - With No.893 Sqn and promoted Petty Officer Air Mechanic 20th June, then aboard HMS Formidable for the North African landings; 1943-44 - Malta convoys, invasion of Sicily and Italy-Anzio landigs; 1944 - Promoted Chief Petty Officer Mechanic; 1945-49 - Appointments at numerous Air Stations; 1949-1951 - HMS Unicorn on station in the Far East, Singapore, Japan and Korea; 1951 - HMS Condor Air Mechanics Course; 1951-1957 - Instructor to Naval Air Apprentices. Retired from the Royal Navy 19th September 1958. |
