![]() ![]() Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir William Dickson GCB KBE DSO AFC (deceased) *Signature Value : £80 | Joined the RNAS in October 1916, becoming a pilot on HMS Furious. He took part in the first air raid launched from an aircraft carrier, attacking an airship base in Denmark. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order, he then moved to the ships HMS Revenge and HMS Queen Elizabeth. He flew on the carrier HMS Argus and spent time as a test pilot at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, before taking up more senior roles. In World War Two he was in various Staff positions and in command of several Air Groups, helping to plan the Allied invasion of occupied Europe. He remained a senior officer in the Royal Air Force post war, gaining the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force before retiring in 1959. He died on 12th September 1987. |
