Corporal Harold Eager (deceased)
*Signature Value : £60

Harold Eager was born on 27th July 1900 at Newhaven in Sussex. At the age of 15 he joined the Expeditionary Forces Canteen and was involved at Newhaven in the shipping of stores to the British canteens in France. In 1917 he joined the Royal Flying Corps and served on various squadrons in France as an aircraft fitter until 1918 when he was injured in an aircraft crash and sent to hospital in England. He was discharged in 1919 and after a short spell at RAF Northolt was posted to India and then on to Baghdad where, for a while, he was involved in the tribal conflict and received a Mention in Despatches on 20th October 1921. He stayed in Mersopotamia for three years serving as a Senior Aircraft Rigger. On return to England in 1922 he was demobilised and joined the Merchant Navy Channel Services at Newhaven where he served for the next 20 years. He took part in Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk and served on until invalided from the Merchant Navy in 1942. He then went to work as an insurance agent and in 1943 joined the Air Training Corps as a Warrant Officer. In 1945 he became an Education Welfare Officer in Hampshire and retired from that position in 1966. In 1970 he was Master at Arms in the Southampton Docks and travelled widely on P&O and Russian liners. He was proud to record that he only stopped working at the age of 90 and was a life member of the Itchen and Hamble Royal Air Forces Association and a member of the Copythorne Royal British Legion.
