A naval diver who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for completing a perilous mission with midget submarine XE-4. Tasked with cutting an undersea Japanese communications cable, he succeeded in cutting the critical wire despite enormous risk at the depth. He died in 2009. Sub-Lieutenant Adam Bergius DSC (deceased) *Signature Value : £70	A naval diver, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for one particularly dangerous mission near Japanese-held Saigon in 1945. Tasked with severing two underwater communications cables to force the Japanese to send messages which could be intercepted, the midget submarine XE-4 commanded by Max Shean scoured the sea bed for hours to find one of the cables. Another diver severed that cable, returning with a piece of it as proof. Later, and much deeper, Bergius was sent out to cut the second cable. With a faulty cutter, his first attempt failed and he returned to XE-4. In the recent times before this dive, two experienced divers had been lost attempting similar tasks at this depth. However, with determination and a replacement cutter, Bergius returned with a length of the severed cable on the second attempt. The X-craft escaped and met up with the larger towing submarine HMS Spearhead, returning to a victorious welcome in the Philippines. He died on 3rd March 2009.
