Alfred Hutchinson (deceased)
*Signature Value : £80

Alfred Hutchinson was born in London on 9th March 1897. He was educated in Tottenham and, when only seventeen and a half years of age, he joined the Royal Marines. Most of his active service in the Great War was aboard small ships of the Royal Navy making North Sea patrols until he was selected for the assault force of 733 marines to be used as the storming party in the attempt to block the U-boat harbour at Zeebrugge. Marine Hutchinson was aboard the Mersey ferry boat Iris during the assault. This small ship had been equipped as a stormship and, when alongside the Mole she became the target for a great concentration of German guns. Two particular shells caused fearful loss. One came through the upper deck, accounting for every man in a party of 56 marines who were waiting to go ashore. The other killed or wounded 30 men in the sick bay. Hutchinson was wounded during the Zeebrugge Raid and was, as a result, invalided from the Royal Navy in 1919. Thereafter he worked in the newsprint industry until 1976 when he retired, living in Farnham, Surrey. Our sources suggest he was alive in 1998 at more than 100 years old, but we have no further information.
