![]() Leslie Harvey (deceased) *Signature Value : £65 | Joining the RAFVR around October 1938, he completed his training before being posted to 54 Squadron at Hornchurch in August 1940 then to 245 Squadron, where a motorcycle accident kept him off flying until mid-1941. After instructing and a stint with 601 Squadron, he joined 94 Squadron in North Africa, where in January 1942 he was shot down over Agedabia, baling out on fire at low altitude and landing with only a shirt - before being clothed by passing Bedouin and carried by camel to a British tank. His subsequent delay in returning to hospital, caused by his old squadron insisting on throwing him a party, inadvertently saved his life, as the hospital ship he had missed was bombed and sank with the loss of 150 patients. He went on to serve through the North African and Italian campaigns on ferry duties, was commissioned in April 1944, and later took command of 290 Sqn in Belgium, being released from the RAF in 1946 as a Flight Lt. He died in November 2002. |
