George Kimbell
A seaman who served during the First World War, he was aboard submarine K17 on the night of 31st January - 1st February 1918, a night which became known as the 'Battle of May Island'. No enemy were involved, but a serious of disastrous collisions between British surface ships and submarines in the mist of the Firth of Forth left over 100 men lost and two K Class submarines sunk, including George's K17. Only 8 of the crew survived the sinking - 56 had been aboard the submarine. Our sources show us that he was alive in 1987 taking part in commemorations 69 years after the event, but we have no further information.

Clipped Signature - George Kimbell. Served aboard submarine K17 and survived what was known as the Battle of May Island - a series of collisions in misty darkness which left K class submarines K4 and K17 sunk, and several vessels damaged. One of only 8 survivors of the sinking of K17, by 1987 George was the last remaining crew member of the submarine. Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures. |
