John Richard Trafford
John Dick Trafford was born in Burscough near Ormskirk, Lancashire on 12th December 1898 and was educated at St. Anne's School, Ormskirk. He left school at the age of 13 and worked in a cotton mill at Ormskirk for a year. At the age of 14 he went to work underground at the Rainford coalmine pulling loaded coal wagons to the main shaft for the wage of 15/- a week. He joined the 9th King's Liverpool Regiment in 1915 giving a false age in order to be with his fellows. He fought at the battle of Loos where he was wounded and, being found under age, he was returned to England. As soon as he was fit again, he was tranferred to the Monmouthshire Regiment and saw action again during the Third Battle of Ypres where he was again wounded. Dick Trafford was demobilised on 9th February 1919 and returned to Ormskirk to live with his parents. He worked in the family building business for five years during which time he learned to drive a car. Then in 1926 he was given a job driving the Ormskirk Workhouse ambulance which he did until 1939 when he tried to rejoin the Army. He failed his Army medical because of poor hearing. He then decided to stay in London where he drove ambulances in Croydon throughout the war and stayed in the ambulance service for many years. He was appointed Superintendent of Ambulances at Epsom in 1950 and there he married a nurse. Together with his wife he next moved back north to Oldham as Superintendent of a retirement home where he worked until he retired in 1964. Our sources suggest he was alive in 1997 as he approached his 100th birthday. We have no further informartion.

Clipped Signature - John Trafford. Joined the 9th King's Liverpool Regiment in 1915, fought and was injured at the battle of Loos and was repatriated. He then fought with the Monmouthshire Regiment at Third Ypres and was wounded again. He became an ambulance driver after WW1, serving as such from 1926 and throughout WW2 and beyond. Please note that this particular signature has been written in pen - not in pencil like most of our signatures. |
