Text for the above items :

HMS Ark Royal III by Ivan Berryman.

Legendary during her brief wartime career, Ark Royal heralded a new era in aircraft carrier design, possessing tremendous hull rigidity and a formidable array of defensive armament. Apart from her key role in Force H in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, Ark Royal also took part in operations off Norway in company with HMS Glorious. It was one of her Blackburn Skuas that claimed the first aerial victory of WWII against a German aircraft on 26th September 1939 and one of her Fairey Swordfish that crippled the mighty Bismarck, leading to the German capital ship's destruction at the hands of the Royal Navy. On 13th November 1941, Ark Royal was torpedoed by U-81 off Gibraltar, her severe list causing flooding to choke her boilers, bringing her to a standstill. Her crew were taken off and the mighty Ark continued to list until she eventually capsized and sank.

HMS Ocean by Ivan Berryman.

HMS Ocean is the sixth ship to bear this famous name and is ably equipped with 12 Sea King HC Mk4s, 4 Landing Craft, 2 Griffon Hovercraft, plus enough equipment necessary to provide support for a Commando battlaion of over 800 Royal Marines. She is depicted here in company with HMS Chatham, flying off Royal Marines from 42 Commando during operations off Sierra Leone.

Malta Relief by Tim Fisher.

Hawker Hurricanes of 249 squadron (RAF) departing off HMS Ark Royal in June 1941 as par tof Force H. The Hurricanes were to become part of the Defence of Malta against the onslought and non stop bombing by the Axis Bombers and HMS Ark Royal would be sunk only a few months later when on the 13th November 1941 HMS Ark Royal was hit by a single torpedo from the German U-boat U81. The torpedo hit on the starboard side near the starboard boiler room causing a 130ft by 30ft hole. Water poured in causing a 10% list immediately. The flooding spread quickly to the middle of the ship and then to the port boiler room, eectric power failed, and after 14 hours while in tow to Gibraltar she capsized and sunk the following day.

Safe Return by Ivan Berryman.

Tribute to William F Dickson by Ivan Berryman.

19th July 1918 - the Tondern raid, the first raid in history carried out from an aircraft carrier. Captain Dickson is shown in his Sopwith Camel 2F.1 departing HMS Furious just after 3am, and along with 5 other aircraft would successfully attack the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern in Denmark. They destroyed two airships in their hangar, and the entire base was subsequently abandoned. 7 aircraft began the raid : one turned back with engine trouble, three landed in Denmark afterwards while another failed to return to the British fleet. Only Dickson and Captain B Smart ditched in the sea near the British ships and were recovered. For this raid, Dickson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He later moved to HMS Revenge and HMS Queen Elizabeth then flew on HMS Argus and was a test pilot at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In World War Two he helped to plan the Allied invasion of occupied Europe. He remained in the RAF post war, retiring in 1959 as Marshal of the Royal Air Force. He died in 1987.

Three Lions by Ivan Berryman.

Representing three distinctive types operated by the Royal Navy in the 1980s, HMS Invincible (RO5) is depicted in company with HMS Naiad (F39), an Ikara Leander frigate and the unique Type 82 destroyer HMS Bristol (D23).

HMS Hermes by Ivan Berryman.

Spearheading the Falklands Task Force as it heads south in 1982, the carrier HMS Hermes is shown in company with two Type 21 frigates, HMS Arrow on the left and HMS Ardent in the near foreground. In the far distance, HMS Glamorgan glints in the sun as Type 42 HMS Sheffield cuts across behind Hermes.

The Pedestal Convoy - HMS Indomitable by Anthony Saunders.

The Pedestal Convoy, to provide desperately needed supplies to the beleaguered Mediterranean island of Malta in August 1942, was perhaps one of the most famous and strategically important convoys of World War II. It had a powerful escort, including three aircraft carriers, one of which was HMS Indomitable. Closely escorted by the cruiser HMS Sirius, she came under heavy attack from both German and Italian bombers on the 12th of August 1942 and was eventually forced to turn back after bomb damage put her flight deck out of action.

HMS Ark Royal (1970s Carrier) by Ivan Berryman.

HMS Ark Royal was the fourth ship in the Royal Navy to bear this memorable name. By far the most impressive, this mighty ship was built to include the angled flight deck, a revolutionary development at the time, with steam catapult. The end of fixed wing aircraft saw Ark Royal quickly become obsolete, being paid off in 1978.

Falklands Task Force by Ivan Berryman.

All pennant numbers were painted out and a vertical black identification stripe applied to all the Type 42s to distinguish them from their Argentine counterparts.

HMS Kelly by Ivan Berryman.

The destroyer HMS Kelly passes close to the old carrier HMS Eagle as she escorts a convoy in the Mediterranean early in 1941.

HMS Bulwark at Hong Kong by Ivan Berryman.

Shown here flying of Wessex HU MK5s of No. 846 Squadron A veteran of the Suez crisis during which time she operated of Grumman Avengers and sea hawks, HMS Bulwark was reduced to training status during 1957. but re emerged as a Commando carrier. Further modifications in late 1970 saw her refitted as a full ASW carrier in which guise she served until the introduction in 1980 of HMS Invincible.

Last Man Away by Ivan Berryman.

The remarkable Fairey Swordfish served with distinction throughout WWII, despite being nothing short of an anachronism. Its dated appearance belied a solid, workmanlike airframe that provided a stable platform from which to launch torpedoes against enemy shipping, the venerable 'Stringbag' sending a greater tonnage of Axis shipping to the bottom than any other allied aircraft in the Second World War. A Mk.II is shown taking off from HMS Ark Royal early in 1941.

HMS Furious with HMS Revenge by Ivan Berryman.

Grand Harbour, Malta, April 1932. The R-Class battleship HMS Revenge slips majestically past the carrier HMS Furious as she lies at anchor as three of her Fairey IIIFs fly overhead on a routine training sortie.
