Captain Henry Long Ben Avery by Chris Collingwood. Avery and his vessel the Fancy being a ship of 46 guns and 150 men set sail in 1695 bound for Madagascar. On the way the fancy caught up with and captured the Ganj-i-Sawai, owned by the Great Mogul himself. Its name means Exceeding Treasure and the treasure it yielded surpassed anything yet seen in the history of piracy. Long Ben became the pirates pirate. |

The Battle of Trafalgar - The First Engagement by Ivan Berryman. Midday, 21st October 1805, and Admiral Collingwoods flagship, the 100-gun HMS Royal Sovereign, breaks the allied line and delivers a shattering broadside on the Spanish flagship Santa Ana. Making great speed, Collingwoods ship had breached the Franco-Spanish line some distance ahead of the rest of his van and the Royal Sovereign suffered heavily as she quickly drew the attentions of three French and three Spanish ships. To her starboard, the French Indomitable can be seen firing into the British flagship while, astern of the Santa Ana, Belleisle and Fougueux are engaging ahead of Mars, Monarca and Pluton. |

Neptunes Wrath by Ivan Berryman (PC) The Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805 and HMS Neptune, having raked the French flagship Bucentaure, found herself alongside the largest warship in the world, the Spanish Santisima Trinidad, a four-decked leviathan of 130 guns. Captain Thomas Frances Freemantle positioned Neptune such that first the mizzen and then the main masts of the Spanish flagship came crashing down under the British ships relentless fire. By 2.30pm, the foremast of the Santisima Trinidad had also fallen, leaving the ship an uncontrollable hulk. Although taken in tow as a prize after the battle, the red and black colossus foundered in the storm that followed and was lost. HMS Neptune herself survived, towing the badly damaged HMS Victory to safety. |
A Night Action off Cadiz by Ivan Berryman. Skirmishes between frigates were a common occurrence, such as here when the 32-gun HMS Amphion encountered a French opponent off Cadiz in 1806 the latter, to her great cost, straying among the British inshore squadron in the darkness of a moonless night. It is understood that the French vessel managed to escape being taken as a prize, although with much damage to her whales and rigging. |
Battle of the Nile by Robert Taylor. Robert Taylor's dramatic painting depicts the Battle of the Nile at about 1800 hours on August 1, 1798. Having caught Napoleon's French Fleet completely by surprise in Aboukir Bay, Vice-Admiral Nelson engaged at 1700 hours. Many of Napoleon's crew were ashore or visiting other ships, and the painting depicts the frantic efforts of crews to rejoin their own ships, immediately following Nelson's attack. |
Trafalgar - The Destruction of the Bucentaure by Ivan Berryman. With her mizzen top already gone and her sails aloft having received severe punishment, Victory breaks through the line behind the French flagship Bucentaure, delivering a shattering broadside into her stern. So severe was this opening fire that the Bucentaure was effectively put out of the rest of the battle, although Admiral Villeneuve himself was to miraculously survive the carnage. Beyong Victory can be seen the French Redoubtable, which is receiving fire from Victorys starboard guns, and the Spanish San Leandro is in the extreme distance. Most of Victorys stunsails have been cut away, but it was her stunsail booms that became entangled with the rigging of the Redoubtable when she put her helm to port and ran onto her. Admiral Nelson fell shortly afterward, having received a fatal wound from a musket ball fired by a French sharpshooter in Redoubtables mizzen fighting top. The Temeraire can be seen approaching the fray to the right. |

(PC) Still showing some signs of her encounter with HMS Macedonian on 25th October 1812 and under the command of Captain Stephen Decatur, USS United States is shown surging through a heavy Atlantic swell en route for Newport, Rhode Island, which she would eventually reach on 4th December, in company with the Macedonian, who she had so decisively defeated and taken as a prize. |

Fire in the Night - The Battle of the Nile, 1798 by Ivan Berryman. (PC) The painting depicts the French ships Franklin and Peuple Souverain taking heavy fire from HMS Defence (centre) with HMS Minotaur in her wake, whilst Nelson in HMS Vanguard can be seen behind them. Other French ships, Spartiate and Conquerant can also be seen through the gap. On the far side of Franklin and Peuple Souverain, the masts and sails of the British ship Orion can be seen as she rakes the French line from the far side. |
The Battle of the Nile by Ivan Berryman. Sunset over Aboukir Bay on 1st August 1798 as ships of the Royal Navy, led by Nelson, conduct their ruthless destruction of the anchored French fleet. To the left Saumarezs HMS Orion is moving into position on the Peuple Souvrain, while her starboard guns rake one of the French frigates inshore. Orion, like the Goliath, Zealous and Audacious, had slipped inside the line of the unprepared French fleet, while Nelson in the Vanguard directed a further eight ships to attack the outside, resulting in one of the most decisive naval victories ever. The French ships seen at anchor include Spartiate and Aquilon, whilst through the gap between Peuple Souvrain and the bowsprit of the Franklin, the British ships Defence and Minotaur can be seen approaching. |

The Battle of Copenhagen – HMS Glattons Bravest Day by Ivan Berryman. The battle of Copenhagen was long and hard-fought and Admiral Parker ordered Admiral Nelson to withdraw, an order that Nelson ignored. At one point a Danish frigate moved swiftly to attack Nelsons flagship HMS Elephant, but Captain Bligh of HMS Glatton sailed his ship directly into the broadside to protect the flagship. The Glatton, already displaying some damage, somehow survived the terrible barrage inflicted to its hull by the low-firing Danish vessel. The Elephant was saved and the battle eventually won with the unconditional capitulation of Denmark. It was surely Captain Blighs finest hour and an act of selfless bravery. In the background, HMS Bellona is aground on a sand bank, one of three British ships that failed to navigate the narrow channel. |
