Spitfires - Malta Bound by Philip West. On the 11th August 1942, Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Wellum DFC, having just taken off from the deck of HMS Furious, leads his section of gathering Spitfires on the long journey to Malta. They are much-needed reinforcements for the beleaguered island, now in the twenty-sixth month of its siege. To enable each of the 38 Spitfires dispatched from Furious to reach Malta, over three hours flying time away, they carry maximum fuel together with a centre-line over-load tank. Even their ammunition is removed to save weight. Escorting Furious to her aft is the Cruiser HMS Manchester together with Destroyers Brave and Lithe. To their port side is the Ohio tanker laden with fuel during what became an epic voyage. In the distance HMS Eagle succumbs to an Axis torpedo attack. The success of Operation Pedestal was absolutely critical for the survival of Malta, bringing desperately needed fuel, food and ammunition to the Island. Losses were heavy but the courage and determination by all involved prevailed: five of the fourteen merchant ships, including the Ohio, made it through and the island was saved. |
Flight Against the Bismarck by Philip West. The Royal Navys week long chase of the formidable German battleship Bismarck culminated in the foul evening weather of 26th May 1941. Despite the deck of HMS Ark Royal pitching through 55 feet, S/Lt John Moffat was one of fifteen Swordfish pilots who took off to attack Bismarck. After 90 minutes of arduous and turbulent flying the Swordfish found their quarry and dived through the intense anti-aircraft fire to drop their torpedoes. One of these hit and jammed Bismarcks rudder and condemned the battleship to sail in slow circles. The Royal Navys own capital ships then closed in and pounded Bismarck into a burning wreck. |
Flight Lieutenant Saving A Wounded Seaman Who Had Fallen Into The Sea. While a wounded seaman was being passed across in a stretcher, from a cruiser Warrior to the seaplane-carrier Engadine, the rolling of the ships threw him into the water. Flight-Lieutenant Rutland at once jumped overboard and, thanks to his aid, the wounded man was hoisted on board the Engadine, but unfortunately he had been so badly crushed that life was already extinct, Lieutenant Rutland was awarded the Albert Medal for his gallant action, and he also received the D.S.C. for his valuable flying services. |

Carrier Glorious - The Life and Death of an Aircraft Carrier by John Winton. One of the most extraordinary stories of human folly in World War Two. June 1940: the German battle-cruiser Scharnhorst and her sister ship Gneisenau were in the Arctic Sea, steaming north to intercept Allied convoys evacuating British, French and Polish troops from Norway, when they sighted the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious, escorted by two destroyers, steering for Scapa Flow. In a ferocious gun battle lasting over an hour, all the British ships were sunk, and more than 1500 men lost their lives. The few survivors were not found for three days. Glorious had left the main convoy to proceed independently. She was not flying an air reconnaissance patrol for her own safety. And she had not received any warning from British intelligence that German battle-cruisers were in the area. Drawing on Admiralty records and the testimony of those who served on Glorious, John Winton reveals the incredible human folly that led almost inexorably to this tragic end, against a background of one of the most disastrous campaigns of the Second World War for Britain and her allies. |

Moment of Truth by Robert Tomlin. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first flight of the DH110, this special edition of 500 copies has been taken from Robert Tomlins original oil painting. It depicts Sea Vixen XP924 of 899 Squadron as it is hurled from the waist catapult of HMS Eagle during the aircrafts last deployment in 1969. Following retirement from 899 Squadron the aircraft went on to serve with Flight Refuelling Ltd before being finally transferred to RAF Llanbedr for target towing duties. In 1996 it was purchased by de Havilland Aviation Ltd and placed on the civil register as G-CV1X. Still in flying condition, the aircraft now forms a core part of the de Havilland Aviation Ltd collection of historic aircraft and is regularly displayed at air shows in the hands of current pilot Dan Griffiths. |
