Captain John Wilfrid Boutwood DSO

Born in 1899, he was a Midshipman aboard HMS Inflexible in 1917 - this battle cruiser had fought alongside HMS Invincible at the battle of the Falklands in 1914, sinking the German cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. His career in the Royal Navy continued and by 1942 he was a Captain in command of the light cruiser HMS Curacoa. This ship was sunk in controversial circumstances - escorting the troop ship liner Queen Mary, the ships collided and Curacao was split in two with loss of more than three quarters of her crew. Around 100 survivors were later rescued. Boutwood went on to command the minesweepers Fly and Fantome during the war, retiring in 1951. We know from our sources that he was alive in 1984, but have no information on his date of death.
